Nokia Lumia 800 vs. HTC Radar – Windows Phones Compared

Nokia Lumia 800 vs. HTC Radar

When Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop described the Nokia Lumia 800 as the world’s “first real Windows Phone”, there may have been some raised eyebrows at HTC.

While the Lumia 800 is certainly one of the fastest smartphones to run Windows Phone 7.5, it isn’t the first and also comes up against competition from two impressive HTC devices, the Titan and Radar.

With the same operating system in both Nokia’s Lumia 800 and the HTC Radar it will be speed that attracts buyers.

Mango comes with features like multi-tasking and Live Tiles, Internet Explorer and Bing is also built in with features for local searches.

In the Radar, Bing results come up as part of a search within the devices operating system, rather than a web-page. Bookmarks are available through a menu in the browser.

Being Microsoft software there’s no way of changing the search engine. It is a new specially designed mobile version for Mango.

The radar comes with a 1GHz Scorpion CPU and Adreno 205 GPU, and it’s RAM is limited to 512MB. Still, this is the same amount of RAM as the new iPhone 4S – showing that it is more than enough for a competent top end smartphone.

The Lumia 800 is powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor with 512MB so they measure up as almost equal. Comparing both over Wi-Fi the first test to be done is seeing how fast they load internet sites.

Pages load quickly but the Lumia edges the Radar out just slightly, only by around a second, if that. When refreshing the Lumia again is quicker, again only marginally.

Both devices can then be tested online using a bit of kit designed especially for testing browser speed. Sunspider Javascript Benchmark 0.9.1 is one option, the other is Rightware Browsermark.

Both are particularly useful if you want to test what sort of internet speed you have in a new town. They are available to download for free. Testing browser speed Rightware comes with a series of scores.

The Lumia scores just over 30,000 while the radar is just below at 27,000. As it suggests in the name, Sunspider tests how a device runs javascript.

It scores the Lumia’s response time at 7026.9ms compared with the radar that came in at 9012.4

Comparing the Internet speeds of both the Nokia Lumia 800 and the HTC radar provides the consumer with an idea of how two of the more high-profile Windows Phone 7.5 new releases measure up.

Fairly equally matched the Lumia edges the Radar out slightly in speed in terms of uploading pages quicker, but it is a marginal difference.

What will really appeal to users, or alternatively put them off is the operating system itself.

Mango has proved popular with reviewers for its ability to integrate internet searches and applications across the device.

Nokia may have cited the best sales in their history in the first week of a device in the UK, but the results show that there are plenty more Windows Phone handsets and powerful smartphones on the market that showcase the capability of the OS that is coming on in leaps and bounds.

With the recent battery problems plaguing the Lumia 800, many prospective buyers may be put off and instead turn to HTC, who have a good reputation for reliability.

The problems with the Lumia should be fully resolved at the start of next year, and the Lumia and Radar will be the perfect Windows Phone deals to shop for during the January sales.

  1. Software giant Microsoft has released the latest version of their mobile operating system. This is the Windows Phone version 7.5 (also known as Mango). Just like Android, various manufacturers have chosen to carry the platform. Two of these phone makers are Taiwan’s HTC and Finland’s Nokia. They have released the Radar and the Lumia 800. And the Nokia Lumia 800 is one of the best Windows Phone handsets out there.

  2. Nokia says:

Lumia 800 is one of the best Nokia + Microsoft devices. Fast, Powerful and flexible!
